All the material properties were taken from the UNS N0398 API 5L X52 steel with planar type laminations. The laminations were modelled in the BM, HAZ and WB. The catenary, tensile, three point bend (TPB) and Charpy V-notch (CV) tests were computed. The three dimensional finite element (FE) models used CFX 7.0 to compute stresses and strain-energy density functions as well as to simulate the crack tip in the pipeline. By positioning a crack tip from the inner wall to the outer wall, the crack propagation results were obtained through the finite element software.
The steel specimen was cut out in a cylindrical shape of 30x80 mm. The diameter was changed to 50 mm, 60 mm or 70 mm. The thickness of which was set to 3, -4 or -5 mm. In addition, the length was changed to 100, 150, 180, or 200 mm. The material and geometric properties and the cross-sectional dimensions of the test specimen are given in Table. 1 and Table. 2, respectively. The mechanical properties were obtained from the flange, the column, the plate, the tube or the pipe.
