Before his time, the rocker-cum-hard-drug-trouble-prone Mod Ace (Kevin Whately) was just another young man with a headful of dreams. But when he fakes his own death to avoid jail time for dealing drugs, he somehow inadvertently winds up with the woman he loves. After enduring a painful, reality-straining drug rehab, Ace returns home to London, where he is thrown into the pop scene. He clings to the most devoted of his numbskulls, a beautiful model named Cressida (Julia Ormond), who can't help but admire his fresh-faced charisma. Ace succeeds in wooing the girl, but when word gets out, the paparazzi track him down. The distance between his dreams and reality grows steadily larger, until the truth of his life finally catches up with him. Will his journey be a painful one, or will he find love at the end of the road?
The monsters are wonderful, seductive creatures. The actors are perfect, and the makeup and costume designers produced some fantastic monsters. The director's intention was to create a sense of the real monster girls from history, but given that the movie was made in the '70s, it's amazing that the director was able to get the costumes and makeup so right. Some of the monsters were more real than others. Although, to be fair, in the era of the movie, a full-scale makeup job was a considerable expense.
I would have liked to have seen the movie be set in the '80s. It's probably too early now for a feature about monsters taking over the world, but it would have been great to see some of the musical monsters from the movie live.
